His education served him well as his interest in fauna, combined with biological illustration, helped him in his botanical paintings. Tagore often knew exactly which plants were native to certain areas which helped his works to be accurate.

Born in 1988 in Calcutta, Rathindranath was the oldest son of Rabindranath Tagore. After completing his schooling, he was sent to Japan in 1906. From there, he moved to the United States and graduated in agricultural science from Illinois State University in 1909.

He became the first vice chancellor of Visva-Bharati University.
