DESCRIPTION
M. Suriyamoorthy was a prominent artist of the Madras Group, which combined Indian traditions with Western modernist techniques under the guidance of K. C. S. Paniker. Suriyamoorthy’s art is known for its regional and folk imagery, heavily influenced by traditional elements such as the Lepakshi murals, kolam patterns, and textile motifs of South India. He was an innovative artist, known for using unconventional materials like holy river water and colours derived from seashells and herbal ingredients. He experimented with mixed media, oil, and acrylic paints throughout his oeuvre. His works often feature geometric divisions filled with scenes of daily life, cultural performances, and deities. Female figures, depicted in various roles from deities to housewives, were a recurrent theme in his art. This painting captures a scene reminiscent of the Last Supper, showcasing his distinctive style and thematic focus. The central figure is surrounded by disciples, depicted with expressive, stylised forms. Suriyamoorthy's use of vibrant colours and intricate patterns reflects his deep roots in traditional Indian art, while the composition demonstrates his modernist approach.
