DESCRIPTION
Sunil Das born in Kolkata was an important post-modernist painter who rose to prominence with his drawing of horses. Das created approximately 7000 horse-themed artworks during the period from 1950 to 1960. During his French art scholarship at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Europe Das developed an ardent fascination for horses and bulls. Das’s paintings bear the unmistakable imprint of his exploration in sculpture at Santiniketan Kolkata and his study of graphic art in Paris. They possess a distinct quality characterised by a structured and rigid composition reminiscent of both sculptural forms and the meticulous etchings found in graphic art.
