DESCRIPTION
M.F. Husain stands as a towering figure in Indian modern art, renowned for revitalising the Indian artistic movement. As a founding member of the Progressive Artists' Group, he played a pivotal role in shaping contemporary Indian art. This artwork is part of Husain's Raj series, which satirically explores the period of British colonial rule in India. The painting depicts a striking contrast between Eastern and Western influences. The central figures—a Maharaja, an Indian queen, and a Western woman—are depicted with vibrant colours and symbolic attire, highlighting the cultural confluence and the satirical commentary on colonial relations. The Indian queen, adorned in traditional attire, contrasts sharply with the Western woman in a modern dress, both seated on a regal tiger, symbolising the blending and clashing of cultures.
