DESCRIPTION
This work is inscribed with a letter signed and dated 27 December 1976 by the artist on the reverse. Ganesh Pyne was born in 1937 in Kolkata. He created intricate ink works and haunting temperas with rich jottings full of imagery and symbolism. His art was inspired by his grandmother's stories and the harsh realities he witnessed. He explored dark and unsettling themes from mythology and dreams. This artwork exemplifies Pyne’s detailed ink work. He frequently used this medium alongside tempera to create symbolic imagery. The drawing depicts a tethered circus monkey dressed in traditional attire with a pointed hat. The monkey is a recurring motif in Pyne’s work. It symbolises his feeling of being reduced to the role of a mere performer akin to a circus animal. This reflects his commentary on the societal status of artists.
