DESCRIPTION
Shyamal Dutta Ray, a distinguished watercolourist of modern India, and pursued his formal education at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Calcutta. He co-founded the Society of Contemporary Artists in 1959 and the Painters 80 in 1968. His work is renowned for its deep engagement with the human condition, often laden with satire, wit, and subtle political commentary.
He mastered the medium of watercolour, revolutionising its use by employing saturated hues. His oeuvre reflects the stark and contradictory realities of contemporary Calcutta, portraying both the despair of poverty and the resilience of hope.
