DESCRIPTION
Jamini Roy born in 1887 in Beliatore West Bengal is one of the most iconic figures of modern Indian art. He began his art career at the Government School of Art in Calcutta and was influenced by Abanindranath Tagore. In the late 1920s and early 1930s Roy transitioned from academic training to embrace a "Bengali folk" style inspired by local art forms like patachitra and Kalighat pat. His work is characterised by bold lines vibrant colours and themes from rural life mythology and religious stories. This painting exemplifies Roy's unique style with simplified forms and bright colours. The composition features a seated woman in traditional attire showcasing his signature bold outlines and decorative elements.
