Born in Surendranagar, Gujarat in 1937, Gulam Mohammed Sheikh studied at MSU Baroda. Subsequently, he taught art history and painting at MSU, Baroda too. Sheikh spearheaded an art movement that focused on the role of the narrative.His academic influences led him to become influenced by images from Indian art, European art and political events to create its own narrative. The autobiographical reference has played an important part in his art.
