Gobardhan Ash stripped bare the stark and uninhibited truth of the famine that hit Bengal in 1943 through scanty washes of earthy brown tones, reflecting endless human misery. Ash's famine series differed from his contemporaries. He used to paint in colour (oil and water), while artists such as Zainul Abedin and Chittaprosad Bhattacharya preferred black and white, or graphics medium.
