The first of the transcripts documenting the formation of the 'Calcutta Group' , a letter dated March 1942 written by Shubho Tagore in Calcutta to Rathin Maitra in Pabna forseeing a vision in creating something to illuminate the nation's art !

ভাই রথীন,
তোমার খবর কি? রনু বাবুর সাথে পথে একদিন দেখা হয়েছিল - তোমাদের বাড়িতেও গেছিলেম একদিন তাঁর সঙ্গে দেখা করতে। কিন্তু তিনি ছিলেন না। তুমি কি করছ? তুমি চলে এস, এস, এস। এখানে কত কাজ হাতে এসে পড়েছে যে কি বলব তুমি অবিলম্বে চলে এসো - চিঠিতে সব লেখা যায়না। তোমায় আসতে লিখতেম না কারণ বন্ধুত্বের দাবীর চেয়েও যে দাবীর জোর বেশী - সেই দাবীর দড়িতে আপাতত তুমি বন্দী - তা আমি বুঝি - কিন্তু কলালক্ষির হাতছানির ইসারা পেয়েছি ভাই, আমার মনকে মত্ত করেছে। তুমি না এলে অসুবিধা আছে অনেক আমার - সেই জন্যই তোমাকে আদেশের সুরে ডাকবার এই আস্পর্ধা! অসম্ভব সম্ভাবনা দেখতে পাচ্ছি -
ভবিষ্যৎ দেশের শিল্প সম্পর্কে দৃষ্টি শক্তি ফোটাবার চেষ্টায় তোমার শক্তি কে কাজে লাগাতেই হবে।
তোমাকে লেকচার দেওয়া বৃথা। কারণ তোমার মনের পরিচয় যেটুকু পেয়েছি তার মধ্যে সত্যিকার সোনার মত খাঁটি শিল্পীর রূপ আমি দেখেছি সেই জন্যেই তোমাকে এতো আমার দরকার - জমিদার অথবা বড়োলোক বলে নয় - তুমি সিনসিয়ার হয়তো আমার চেও। নানা কারণে আমায় যখন তখন কাদায় পা বাড়াতে হয় তাতে নিজেকেও অনেক সময় নোংরা করতে বাধ্য হই - হয়তো অনেক খানি জলও তাতে ঘোলা হয় - কিন্তু তোমার বেলায় তা খাটেনা। তুমি ভগবানের দয়ায় আমার চেয়েও অনেক কাজ অনেক সুচারু রূপে করবার ক্ষমতা রাখো - চলে এসো।

What's up with you? I met Ronu Babu ( Rathin Maitra's younger brother) once on the way - even I visited your house once to meet him. But he wasn't there. What are you up to? Please come back, come back, come back. I'm unable to express how much work here has come to my hand , come back immediately - I'm not being able to write everything in the letter. I wouldn't have asked you to come back, because currently you are bound to the rope of that claim which is even stronger than the claim of friendship. But my brother, I got a beckoning of the artistic muse that desorted my mind. If you don't come back I'll face a lot of problems. For this reason I dare to ask you to come back urgently in the tone of command! I'm foreseeing an immense possibility -
To illuminate the vision of our nation's art, your strength will be needed.
I know it's meaningless to give you lecture. Because what I have understood of your mind, I have seen the true essence of a genuine artist, pure like real gold - that's why I need you badly - not because you're a zamindar or a wealthy person - perhaps you are more sincere than me. For various reasons, I often have to step into the mud. As a result, I often have to get myself grubby as well - but it is not applicable in your case. By the grace of the Almighty, you are blessed with the capability of handling everything smoothly - come back.
